Very early oak coffer – hollowed out tree trunk with lid.

Standard

Photographed in June 2015 this is the earliest form of oak coffer. It was made by simply hollowing out a tree trunk and then fitting a lid (just as early boats – dug-out canoes for example – were made). This one in the church at Morville in Shropshire will certainly date to the 14th Century or earlier. It is of massive construction.
