Wall hanging 19th century from Yazd

This long thin wall hanging (about 40cm wide) was bought by Tony at auction in The Netherlands about 20 years ago. It is a cut silk velvet ikat (a complex technique). It is probably late 19th century and made in the Yazd area of Central Iran. We have some other smaller pieces of this type of textile in our collection. They have a wonderful silken iridescence.

  1. Hi,
I have curated an exhibition on World Ikat Textiles at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS London, Russell Square which is ongoing till 25 June. I have just found out about your collection of Yadz velvet ikats; and wonder how possible it might be to lend a piece to the exhibition, as at the moment we have none from Iran! I am returning to London again from 9-15 May as we have the Ikat Symposium at the Brunei Gallery Lecture Hall from 14-15 May; and our focal exhibition in the Lobby changes from Thai mudmee ikats to Indian Patan Patola.
    Hope to hear from you.

    regards,
    Edric Ong
